7 Habits of Highly Fit People

Have you ever noticed how some people can train and stay fit, while others get stuck in an endless loop of weight loss and weight gain? As the daughter of gym owners, I’ve seen fitness fads come and go. As a yoga teacher myself, I’ve seen people start health regimes with zeal, only to fizzle out without realizing lasting results. But I’ve also seen people, year after year, improve their bodies. To find out what makes the difference I asked some of my favorite fitness icons for answers, and here’s what they had to say.

7. KEEP IT REAL:

You can’t go from couch potato to Iron Man racing. At least not quickly. Yoga guru and author Sadie Nardini (The 21-Day Yoga Body, Random House), says a friend’s relationship advice inspired her fitness routine. “Don’t act like today is all you have,” the friend advised. “Assume 30 years.” For Nardini, that means making fitness part of her everyday life rather than trying to add yet another thing to the to-do list. “Make your fitness routine an organic part of your lifestyle,” she says. “Create each day (or so) around something healthy you can fit in without having to make sweeping changes. Start naturally. After work, go for a walk. Or do 20 minutes of yoga that challenges you without overwhelming your body. Increase if and when it feels possible, but allow yourself to look at the big picture, and take actions that will benefit [you for the long haul], not just the smaller moment at hand.”

6. DON’T WAIT TILL YOU’RE BORED
Denise Mast, president of New York Adventure Racing Association, has been finding new fitness challenges since the 1990s. “Mix up what you’re doing,” Mast advises. “There’s so much out there. After years and years of running I discovered adventure racing. That got me into mountain biking and paddling. Now I do boot camp and obstacle races. Before you find you’re getting bored, find something else that interests you.”

5. PARTICIPATE IN EVENTS

Ann Marie Miller, a USA Cycling Level 2 Licensed Coach at Chelsea Piers, says that training for a goal or a specific date helps keep her training on track. “And you can monitor your progress along the way,” Miller says. “You don’t need to do a full Ironman triathlon or a marathon. Start with more attainable goals like a 5K Fun Run or Walk, a Sprint Triathlon or a Charity bike ride. Charity rides usually offer multiple distances, so you can choose the ride that’s the right length for you.”

4. PAIR UP

Sometimes you need that extra kick. “I met someone who I had to work really hard to keep up with,” says Chelsey Magness, a professional acrobat. “I wanted to see how long it would take until [he was] working hard to keep up with me.” She says that training, playing and exploring together helps them stay fit as a couple, physically as well as mentally and emotionally.

3. SET GOALS

A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step. The same is true of fitness. “Setting short-term goals allows you to stay motivated,” says former professional ice skater Jason Cotnoir. But he’s quick to add, “leave yesterday behind. Don’t let your past missteps affect your present. Many people get discouraged if they miss a workout or eat something they were trying to avoid. When this happens, people tend to feel like a failure [which] can quickly derail you from your goals. It’s important to know that you can only control what happens today!”

2. THE FAME PRINCIPLE

Whether you’re experienced or new to working out, a personal trainer can help you get results you never dreamed possible. “No matter who you are it’s easy to get in a rut,” says Robert L. Kirchner, my father, and owner of the Holiday Health and Racquet Club. “Celebrities and famous hire trainers to keep them motivated, so can you. You can hire a pro at any gym at just about any budget, and it will inspire your routine.”

1. DO NOT EXERCISE

This one’s mine. Homework is full of exercises, maybe that’s why the e-word makes me want to run screaming into the night. Yet I’ve exercised my whole life. Before discovering yoga, you’d find me at the gym under my headset, flipping through a magazine while riding a bike or climbing stairs. It wasn’t until I connected with something that was challenging physically and mentally that I became truly fit. That component was missing was, well, love. I had to love what I was doing, so I wasn’t so much exercising as getting to do that thing I couldn’t wait to do. Even when it was (is) hard.

Lisa L. Kirchner is working on her new memoir, Toward a Secret Sky. Her current book, Hello American Lady Creature, is out now.

New IVF treatment brings hope

One of the most commonly treated infertility-related conditions in the United States is diminished ovarian reserve, also known as low-egg-count. In these patients, despite maximum amount of IVF medications, their ovaries produce few if any usable eggs for IVF.
Since these patients tend to have the same ovarian response to maximal doses of medications as they do to minimal doses of medications, there has been a new trend of using minimal stimulation for both older patients and those with poor ovarian reserve.

In 2013, Dr. Sherman J. Silber of the Infertility Center of St. Louis found that “minimal stimulation gave similar results to conventional IVF at half the cost and literally no side effects. For older women and those with very low ovarian reserve, it was actually superior to conventional IVF.”
The results of this study were likely due to the thought that high doses of fertility drugs may actually lead to abnormal egg development in women with poor reserve.
Therefore, gentler medical treatments leads to gentler growth of these delicate eggs and better outcomes.
When counseling a patient about conventional IVF vs minimal stimulation IVF, it is important to note that if the patient is not a poor-responder (as a result of a low egg count), under-dosing her medications could cause worse outcomes.

This is due to the fact that fewer eggs are retrieved, therefore less will fertilize, and potentially fewer embryos will be available for transfer.  This is also a rather new approach, therefore there is still a lack of long-term data on success rates and potential outcomes.
However, the risks of hyper-stimulation, which can be life-threatening, and the number of total injections are dramatically reduced so the overall patient satisfaction is much higher.
Furthermore, the cost is dramatically reduced, since not only is less medicine being used, but since fewer eggs are retrieved, less laboratory processing services are required.
Taken together, minimal stimulation IVF is a promising new tool for treating older patients and those with low egg counts.

Had a sleepless night? Blame your smartphone

Artificial light emitted from digital devices such smartphones and tablets could reduce the quality of your sleep, a study has warned.

The largest source of blue light is sunlight, but it is also found in most LED-based devices. Blue light boosts alertness and regulates our internal body clock, or circadian rhythm, that tells our bodies when to sleep.

This artificial light activates photoreceptors called intrinsically photosensitive retinal ganglion cells (ipRGCs), which suppresses melatonin, the hormone that signals your body that it is time to sleep.

"The most important takeaway is that blue light at night time really does decrease sleep quality. Sleep is very important for the regeneration of many functions in our body," said Lisa Ostrin, assistant professor at University of Houston in the US.

In the study, participants, aged between 17 and 42, wore short wavelength-blocking glasses three hours before bedtime for two weeks, while still performing their nightly digital routine.

Results showed about a 58 per cent increase in their nighttime melatonin levels.
"Those levels are even higher than increases from over- the-counter melatonin supplements," said Ostrin, who led the study published in Ophthalmic & Physiological Optics.

Wearing activity and sleep monitors 24 hours a day, the 22 study participants also reported sleeping better, falling asleep faster, and even increased their sleep duration by 24 minutes a night, according to Ostrin.

Ostrin recommends limiting screen time, applying screen filters, wearing computer glasses that block blue light, or use anti-reflective lenses to offset the effects of artificial light at nighttime.

Some devices even include night mode settings that limit blue light exposure.

"By using blue blocking glasses we are decreasing input to the photoreceptors, so we can improve sleep and still continue to use our devices. That is nice, because we can still be productive at night," Ostrin added.

Science reveals Harry Styles is one of the most handsome people in the world

One Direction star Harry Styles is one of the most handsome looking people on the planet, science has confirmed.

In a report published by the Centre For Advanced Facial Cosmetic and Plastic Surgery it has been stated that Styles, 23, is objectively one of the top-tier looking people from the human species.

As per Entertainment Weekly, the report looks at The Golden Ratio (known as Phi) and how the symmetry of celebrities' faces can be used to rank them in order of attractiveness.
Styles has the most handsome eyes and his chin is even closer to perfect status.

According to the study, Styles has the most handsome eyes. Supposedly, the distance between the eyes, divided by the length of the eye should equal 1.618 (known as Phi). Styles' peepers are 98.15 per cent of that perfect ratio.
His chin is even closer to perfect status. For maximum attractiveness, the width of the chin at the mid point where it goes in the most should be 1.618 times the length of the lip. Styles' chin is 99.7 per cent of this ratio

Now, Twitter is testing a $99 subscription plan

The plan is aimed at those people or small brands who want to grow and would rather throw money at the social media network.

If you want your tweets to appear in the timelines of strangers, Twitter is offering testing a plan to automatically promote your tweets, for which you will have to pay $99 month.

However, this subscription plan is not offered to all users, but only those invited can avail this option.

In a blog post on Friday, Twitter said that instead of creating and optimizing separate Twitter Ads campaigns yourself, this programmer will do the heavy lifting.
"You just need to continue using Twitter as you normally do - tweeting updates, links, and media that you want a larger audience to see. Then, the promotion of your tweets will be automated," the blog post read.

The plan is aimed at those people or small brands who want to grow and would rather throw money at the social media network.

Twitter has added zero users since first quarter, posting $574 million in revenue in the second quarter this year which is a decrease of  ..
Twitter now has 328 million monthly active users (MAUs) -- the same number it reported in the first quarter of 2017.

Despite stalled user growth, Twitter was now exploring new revenue streams and ways of innovation.

When it comes to "Promoted" tweets, the number of brands using Twitter for advertising has been on the rise.

Globally, in the first quarter of 2017, Twitter streamed more than 800 hours of live premium video from content partners across over..
450 events, reaching 45 million unique viewers -- an increase of 31 per cent from the fourth quarter of 2016.

According to a report in Engadget, this is a clear experiment to try out a new source of cash flow for Twitter, which saw a drop in advertising revenue this year, making $439 million in second quarter, compared to $535 million in the same period last year.

Apple may add 4K HDR support for iTunes

AN FRANSISCO: Apple may be mulling 4K support for iTunes content, a report said, adding that few users in the UK spotted a 4K HDR listing for recently-purchased films on iTunes.
iTunes does not support content in 4K HDR as of now.

However few users found that several films including 'Fantastic Beasts', 'Passengers' and 'Where to Find Them' showed copies of the film as 4K HDR, Apple Insider reported on Saturday.

Twitter users checked their own iTunes purchas ..

This comes amid rumours that the company is preparing an Apple TV 4K model that could be launched later this year.
Apple will need to release a new model to play 4K movies from iTunes as hardware limitations within the current Apple TV prevent it from supporting 4K resolutions with a software update.

Apple is offering content in 1080p at a time when the likes of Amazon, Google and Netflix are ahead with 4K HDR movies.

Sex on wedding night – good or bad?

Sex on wedding night – good or bad?

Question: I am getting married soon, and it's an arranged one. I know my fiancee since March, but we have never met. Also, though we talk but we have never discussed sex. She is a well-educated, typical Indian girl. But, I don't know how I should start the conversation on sex. Is it okay to have sex on the wedding night with her? Please help.

By Anonymous

Answer by Aanchal Bhatnagar: Thank you for voicing out a concern that haunts many of us. While the wedding night is mentioned as an awaited moment, it can often become a matter of anxiety and nervousness for couples. Perhaps, your confusion is valid and it shows your genuine care. It is good to see that you are concerned about your relationship and your would-be wife, and not forcing things onto her and yourself.

It seems that you have managed to develop a friendly and respectful relationship with your fiancee, which is commendable. While mutual respect and trust have been developed between you two, you can now subtly begin to initiate a conversation around sex. I assume that it must also be a thought in her mind that she is not able to voice out yet. Perhaps, your slight initiation would also allow her to express her concerns and wishes. It is always healthy to be able to openly share your anxieties and desires about such sensitive themes, since there is no other way your partner can know about it.

Surely, it is difficult to initiate a conversation around sex with your partner, but it is equally important. While your wedding is round the corner, it must be a concern for both of you and a conversation will lessen the anxiety on the wedding day. Perhaps, you can begin by asking her how she wants the wedding and the wedding night to be. The idea is to be able to open a space for free conversation around this theme.

To your question, "whether it is good to have sex on the wedding night"; I can only say that there is no good or bad to this. Surely, the wedding night is something that gets imprinted in our minds; however, sex is not the only thing it is dependent on. I feel that the cultural fascination around the wedding night has made it very rudimentary and obvious. However, what is important to remember is that your wedding night is what you want it to be. It can be about sex or about late night chit-chats or a good cuddled sleep or perhaps, a combination of them all. The point being that your wedding night is something that you want it to be and not what you think is 'good' or 'must'.
